Lake Kelimutu in Flores

      Don’t miss your fun trip to Lake Kelimutu when you spend a holiday in Flores. The lakes are beautiful regarding to its three beautiful and stunning colors especially when the rainbow appears. The three lakes which are located at the top of Mount Kelimutu belong to Koanara Village, Wolowaru district, around 66 kilometers from Ende city and 83 kilometers from Maumere. Moni is the closest city; it lies on the foot of Mount Kelimutu.

      Scientifically, the reasons of the lake water changes are the mineral content factor, rocks, moss under the craters, and effect of the sunlight. Some scientists believe that the lakes are formed by volcanic eruption in ancient times. Interestingly, those three lakes have different colors but located in the same mount.

      Kelimutu region is surrounded by dense forest with diverse plants that are rarely found elsewhere. Other than pine trees, there are also edelweiss flower, redwood, ferns, Marga plants, and many others. The pine forest grows well on the height of Mount Kelimutu. Meanwhile, other areas of the mount are categorized barren due to its unstable sand and soil.

      Local people believe that Mount Kelimutu is sacred and Lake Kelimutu in Flores is believed to be the place of souls. These souls are convinced to have monstrous natural forces.
